Also it's much easier to appear as a "genius" when a profession (philosopher, inventor etc.) is first conceived. Being first allows for much wider and thus more impressive output, though in hindsight, not all of it might be of good quality. E.g. the ancient Greek philosophers made tons of bizarre assumptions about the physical world that they could have disproved empirically even back then. No one would go out on thin ice like that nowadays, and rightly so.
