SGI Octane: What can a $30k computer from the 90s do?
- johnthescott 3y agoin 1990s bought an indigoII 8 core geometry engine for use in geophysics. my wife almost had a heart attack. irix, those were the days.
- mixmastamyk 3y agoSimilar to a cheap computer today. But you’d have to be happy with Netscape 4.x as a browser. Maybe a newer one in a newer Linux dist, but not sure what the latest one is that supports it is.
- carabiner 3y agoLots of good 1st hand accounts in the comments on that vid.
- glimshe 3y ago400K of hardware and software that can probably be easily replaced by a $150 mini PC and open source.
- hulitu 3y agoCan you give some example ?
- glimshe 3y agoGo to Amazon and look for "Mini PC" and you will find sub $150 hardware. As for software, you have Gimp and Blender as examples of software that far exceed the capabilities of what SGI had in the 90s.
- mixmastamyk 3y agoI wouldn’t be surprised if Photoshop 3/4 and Maya 1.X still have a few advantages over floss alternatives, such as CMYK color. Also, the desktop Octane was tens of thousands not hundreds of. However the freedom is priceless.
- fargle 3y agothat's an Octane 2 from the early 2000s, almost 10 years newer than the Indys and original Octanes from the 1990s
