Thank you and sorry you had to go through all that. Luckily I was able to get in and delete the account. I've had multiple experiences with older relatives losing their accounts as well. It's tough to help them with security when they have trouble even navigating the app/browser let alone figuring out how to use an authenticator app. I've tried to get them cheap tablets or chromebooks to use specifically for their social media then keep their other computers just for email/taxes and that seems to have helped, but still not ideal.
And yes using an authenticator app is my big takeaway here too. I was lazy and delayed migrating all my accounts over to it, but this has definitely spurred some action on that front.
- mattbgates 3y agoI switched my mom to a Chromebook and my dad got a tablet a few years ago because their Windows computers were just loaded with viruses for absolutely no reason. The chances of getting viruses or malware with those two types of devices were very slim, and yet, they figured out how to still get in trouble. I always recommend Chromebooks to just about everyone simply because they remain fast and low on the virus level, yet they somehow still manage to either download a faulty extension or go to a website they do not belong. It can be annoying and I do wish these large manufacturers would figure out how to make better PCs for older people. And I haven't had any issues and do have that peace of mind ever since I enabled the Authenticator app.
