Van Gogh's Artistic Breakthrough
- mg 3y agoVan Gogh wrote that with The Night Café he tried "to express the idea that the café is a place where one can ruin oneself, go mad, or commit a crime". Were cafés different back then?
- sdwr 3y agoIt's about the tension between inner desire and acceptable behavior. A cafe is a fine place, unless you are out of work, friendless, with nothing productive to occupy your attention. Then the gap between what you are allowed to do (buy food, make pointless chit-chat, wait for something interesting to happen) and what you want to do (anything!) grows.
- pwython 3y agoI wonder if this quote is the inspiration behind McDonald's creating the McCafé.
- selestify 3y agoWhich part specifically is the breakthrough?
- Timwi 3y agoMy thought exactly. The link is just to the Wikipedia article, and no section in that article has “breakthrough” in the title.
