Brazil Denies U.S. Extradition Request for Alleged Russian Spy
- 0xDEF 3y agoFirst sign of BRICS showing teeth. We are probably only few months away from Brazilian and Russian Navy ships doing intimidating "naval exercises" near US cities. "Exciting" times ahead.
- JumpCrisscross 3y ago> First sign of BRICS showing teeth Chersakov is in a Brazilian jail. His extradition request by Russia was also denied. Brazil is keeping its leverage, not showing any teeth. > few months away from Brazilian and Russian Navy ships doing intimidating "naval exercises" near US cities Russia isn’t even among Brazil’s top 25 trading partners [1]. Singapore outclasses it. There is zero chance of this happening. Not just out of economic self interest. But because a spent power like Moscow has no ships to spare an ocean away. - dragonwriter 3y ago> Chersakov is in a Brazilian jail. His extradition request by Russia was also denied No, it was approved before the US request, and that's the basis of denying the US request. OTOH, the approved extradition to Russia is on hold pending resolution of charges in Brazil.
- JumpCrisscross 3y ago> No, it was approved before the US request, and that's the basis of denying the US request. It was absolutely not the basis for denying the American request. [EDIT: Nvm.] > on hold pending resolution of charges in Brazil Suspended under color of a counterintelligence operation. Not simply put on hold. He isn't going home for a long time. Brazil isn't going to bend over backwards for the sick man of Europe.
- dragonwriter 3y ago> > No, it was approved before the US request, and that's the basis of denying the US request. > It was absolutely not the basis for denying the American request. “The Ministry of Justice said the U.S. request was considered unfounded since Brazil's Supreme Court had already approved Russia's extradition request in April.” [0] [0] https://www.cbsnews.com/news/sergey-cherkasov-brazil-extradition-request-us-russia-alleged-spy/ https://www.cbsnews.com/news/sergey-cherkasov-brazil-extradi...
- dragonwriter 3y ago> First sign of BRICS showing teeth. Seems there is a rather routine priority of extradition requests issue in the case; reading it as a BRICS thing is... a stretch.
