Lindsey Graham and Elizabeth Warren: When It Comes to Big Tech, Enough Is Enough

- taeric 3y agoHard not to read this a populist appeal more than anything else. Though, I do agree that legislation is needed for many of the actual worries here. At large, there are social problems out there, and looking for technical solutions is very unlikely to help. I do find it obnoxious to focus on "big tech" for such things as "data leaks," when, if anything, "big finance" is far more culpable on that area. I can't claim that the big companies haven't had leaks and problems; but I do think the leaks of banks and numerous small companies are worse. Will have to dive on the numbers some. And this is ignoring the massive nonsense that is the political parties collecting and using more personal information to build demographic maps the likes of which "big tech" simply has no use for.
- Loquebantur 3y agoWhataboutism very much? This is a matter concerning the entire populace, twisting that into calling it "populistic" is very weird. Big tech is creating new or exacerbating existing social problems. By contorting social platforms into dysfunctional, addiction inducing ad dispersal machines for example. So of course, technical solutions have to play a role, too. Finance is certainly not the party most culpable for data leaks. That's ridiculous. Advertisement has very much use for demographic maps.
- taeric 3y agoI said I agree that we could use legislation. I specifically question the voracity of the messaging here. Is not even whataboutism, is literally making up concerns on the few "big tech" companies while everyone is getting fleeced by nonsense in the financial world. Don't get me wrong, if you want to abolish facebook and/or twitter, I doubt I would really shed a tear. Most of the complaints here, though, are not really leveled at them. Heck, I wouldn't be upset to see the others get split. But we continue to make banks bigger and bigger. We have thrown healthcare to pipe dreams only. We seem to endorse that the only way to have a future is to borrow against it. Name the biggest data leaks out there. You will find that banks make up as much of that list as "big tech." Notable that two of the main "big tech" companies aren't even on the list. Such that I feel fine standing by that claim. Though, again, I support more legislation. I don't support pretending there are monocle wearing villains at "big tech" that is our largest problem. That doesn't mean I think we can't also still do something about real concerns there.
- NN88 3y agoThis is why Warren > Sanders, IMO Warren is functionally aware of how to enact policy, not just advocate a bullet point list of wishes. Whether this goes anywhere, is a different story.
