Those "long-term roadmaps" are, in my experience, created by self-important architects who are far removed from the realities and needs of everyday developers. Full of lofty ideals, grandiose abstractions, and "silver-bullet-itis". Good communication across teams and good design (i.e. flexible, maintainable, extensible) tends to alleviate the tunnel vision associated with each team building what works for them.
