China looks to flood US market with cheap electric vehicles
- monero-xmr 3y agoThis will never happen. Rules, regs, tariffs, lobbying - absolutely impossible.
- downrightmike 3y agoKei cars are an import exception because they are 30+ years old. There will be no way that they can bring them in.
- Kon-Peki 3y agoThe regulatory environment in the US makes it much harder to sell vehicles in the US than in Europe. But, if Chinese manufacturers are willing to put in the effort, they can satisfy the regulations. I have almost zero faith in the willingness of domestic automakers to make the kind of vehicles people need. Perhaps an existential crisis will force them to.
- cafard 3y agoThe Japanese looked to flood the US market with cheap ICE cars. They gained a lot of ground, but the US market is not wholly theirs. The Chinese should look into the history of all that.
- Kon-Peki 3y agoVery true. The US did some protectionist things, and the current tax credits based on battery origin definitely count. In the end, the Japanese manufacturers found that building factories in the US and filling them with US workers was way better than shipping cars from Japan. You have to wonder if the Chinese manufacturers would come to the same conclusion.
- fomine3 3y agoYou missed US-Japan Alliance. Ultimately Japan can't fully oppose to US' critical core interest. China isn't.
- ep103 3y agoBehold the power of the free market, and the inability of the government to do anything right! ... Wait a minute
- tibbydudeza 3y agoAin't gonna happen unless they open up plants in the US like Kia and Hyundai did.
- alanwreath 3y agoI dislike the wording of “cheap”, do they mean cheap as in bad materials or affordable to lower incomes. That said comments like this “”” Chinese EV company Nio, recently told the Financial Times that the U.S. should offer Chinese EVs equal access to the American market “”” make me wonder what “equal access” means. Does it mean that when we let the company do business in the US that someone from our government must be allowed on the board of the company? I’m not rooting really for anyone. Nor am I proposing a solution I want. I’m just spewing venom I guess.
