What more direct message do you think would've been better, and how would it have been better? Is there a specific channel, statement, or way of phrasing it that would have materially changed something, in your view?
I don't think you're engaging in this at all, but it was quite a tactic back in the day to tell people who'd been harmed that they needed to speak more directly, and that if only they had done so, the powers that be would've addressed their grievances. Spoiler: that was never the case.
- Clubber 3y ago"Priests are sexually abusing children in the Catholic Church," would have been nice and probably way more effective at stopping it sooner.
- stevenwoo 3y agoShe may have been talking about the Magdalene Laundries in Ireland of which she was a victim, and for which the Irish government apologized for a few years after the photo ripping incident (and a thorough investigation). It's a different scandal where Catholic dioceses made money off of young women and girls by institutionalizing them and making them work, and would have been more difficult to explain to Americans in the nascent public internet times. Also the photo was her mother's, who also abused her so a lot going on there symbolically.
- Anthony-G 3y agoI’d with this comment. In an interview, she said that the photograph had been prominently displayed in her mother’s house where she had been abused. After her mother died, she took the photo with the intention of destroying it some day (as a symbol of the hypocritical abuse she suffered).
