Many people keep a gun around because they have the mindset of preparedness for very unlikely events. As a result of that mindset, the prospect of the gun not working in the moment of truth is a very real concern. For example, many people will not own or carry a gun with a manual safety because of the anecdotal cases of people forgetting to disengage the safety and losing the fight as a result. I have heard police express this view, after they personally investigated such cases. The notion of "fewer things that can go wrong" has always been a major selling point for handguns - previously, it was revolvers and nowadays it's Glocks and their myriad of clones. Therefore, there will be many people who will not adopt this willingly until they see the police or military adopt it. They will feel that there's just no good reason to take the risk.
