Linux Marketshare Myth: 2012 Edition
- user2459 15y agoIt's all a matter of semantics at this point. What's the difference between a tablet with a keyboard and a laptop with a touch screen? Nothing. Maybe locked down software vs open software, but does that mean I can install android on my laptop and it becomes a tablet?
- jakeonthemove 15y agoWhy does everyone keep forgetting about "the laptop"? It used to be a part of "the desktop", but it has now pretty much replaced it - no one I know uses a real desktop tower anymore, unless they need some extreme hardware power. For all the advantages that the cloud and tablets offer, you'll have to pry my laptop out of my cold, dead hands.
- angrycoder 15y agoyou are confusing 'has a' vs 'is a'. Desktop is a catch all term that refers to laptops and desktops. In the context of this article, the opposite of a desktop isn't a laptop, it is a server.
- ekianjo 15y agoFor gaming laptops are a joke. And who doesnt prefer a huge screen to work with? Laptops are practical but never replace a desktop.
- pjmlp 15y agoSure they do. My last desktop was bought in 2002 and I am not buying a desktop again. I value the portability much more than the possibility to change slots, which in my case, I have seldom done.
- rbanffy 15y ago> And who doesnt prefer a huge screen to work with? That's why I hook up my netbook to a big LCD monitor when it's sitting at my desk - to get two screens, one large and one small, and a much more comfortable environment to work than a single screen would allow me. And I don't play games, but I'd appreciate to be able to compile a Linux kernel in less than 60 seconds.
- nknight 15y ago> For gaming laptops are a joke. I guess I've just imagined years of gaming on a laptop, then. > And who doesnt prefer a huge screen to work with? Got one. Along with an external keyboard and mouse. What's your point? > Laptops are practical but never replace a desktop. I haven't used a desktop in years.
- justncase80 15y agoThe laptops you can usually play a decent game on are so big they defeat the purpose of being a laptop.
