Activists still thinking what they do matters and how they do it is crucial. In reality it all amounts to nothing. Climate change is a very difficult problem, we don't know what to do about it, it's not that we do but don't want to. You can not give up fossil fuels, not without billions dying. Batteries are not zero impact. Neither are solar panels and wind turbines. Infrastructures take ages to replace. Plastic makes things possible that would otherwise wouldn't be.
This fairy-tale that the solutions are simple but there are bad guys who don't want them has to stop. The people with capital will make money on energy no matter how it is produced. And they are diversifying right now, they are investing serious money into alternative stuff. But it's going to take time. And most of those solutions will fail at scale in the long run. Shit is not as simple like a good guys bad guys movie. Grow up.
Meanwhile the hippy activist crowd replaces their electronics every year, buys tons of fast fashion, 10 throw away cups of mokasomething per day, etc.
- jaggs 3y agoYou're not wrong. But that's not to say we should stop doing everything to fight back, right? We need to keep trying everything we can (except throwing sulphuric acid in the sky) to slow stop or reverse this catastrophe? Just because it's almost impossible doesn't mean we shouldn't try.
- trabant00 3y agoI'm not saying we shouldn't try. Far from it. But activism is not really the answer. We must focus on real science, slowly reduce unnecessary consumption because any energy and material and fabrication will pollute, test pilot programs, you know, practical things. Not screaming "JUST STOP OIL!" or even positive stuff like the article says. I'm confident we'll get through this even if with scars. But it will be hard, it will take time, it will take scientists and engineers and it will take sacrifices. It will not take activism.
- jaggs 3y agoYes I hear what you're saying. I guess the real problem is we've been trying the 'slow and steady' approach for the past 50 years or so, and still we're facing a 2 degree future. And things are definitely getting worse. Much worse. So do we continue trying something which clearly doesn't work - your 'practical' things - or accelerate the pace somehow? I don't have answers, but clearly something is not working right now.
