I hear the sentiment but the paper makes the argument that some of that time traveling can be replaced with knowledge available at compile time. Sort of like calling the stores to check inventory before leaving the house. The BasicBlocker idea is not wholly new (paper lays out the history) but a key improvement over earlier attempts is a design that is tolerant of variations in run-time behavior. There's also been plenty of other research about energy efficient alternatives to out of order execution. To me the interesting questions are things like: How much more perf can we squeeze out of efficiency-focused cores like what are used in GPUs? Will E cores end up being the workhorse of future generations of CPUs? Will This lead to a CPU-GPU convergence? Etc.
