I was given a cat that was hostile and hid most of the time.
His previous staff had financial difficulties so he had not been to the vet for years. I booked a routine visit to the vet which happened a couple of weeks later and they said he had rotten teeth. After removal of a few teeth he was happy and friendly.
My checklist for a new cat starts 1) Check closely and carefully for fleas. Flea eggs lie dormant in your carpets then they leap and bite you when the sense movement. Deal with any sign of fleas immediately.
2) Vet without delay if there may be something wrong
