Scientists detect sign that a crucial ocean current is near collapse
- jbottoms 3y agoWhen do we declare DEFCON 1? We need to be on a war footing now!
- aeternum 3y agoAs others have pointed out, this is just an overreaction and bad science. As a thought experiment, consider the level of mass panic and hysteria if the dust bowl happened to occur in this century rather than in 1930. It's important that we ween ourselves off fossil fuels, but the panic about some kind of impending climate catastrophe is not science based.
- freddealmeida 3y agoI disagree about oil and NG,LNG. We need more of that. Cheap energy is better for the world than anything else. You would decimate the world if we move off carbon fuels. fyi oil is not made from fossils or decaying matter. No evidence of that at all.
- jmopp 3y agohttps://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Treibs&Chlorophyll.png https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Treibs&Chlorophyll... On the right is a chlorophyll molecule. On the left is a molecule found in oil shale. Their structure is far too similar to be coincidence.
- Arnt 3y agoYou fell for a distration. The origin doesn't really matter, that happened long ago, that ship has sailed. What matters is that burning oil releases large amounts of CO₂ and that disrupts the climate.
- thefurdrake 3y ago> fyi oil is not made from fossils or decaying matter. No evidence of that at all. What is oil made from?
- ars 3y agoThis was discussed here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36864319 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36864319 and basically determined to be bad science. Or at the very least bad science communication.
- treeman79 3y agoThe point of these type of articles is for rich politicians to be given more power over peons and an excuse to raise taxes endlessly. Science has nothing to do with anything here.
