Using something like Medium vs. blogging on your company site

We need to start publishing blog posts for our company to drive traffic and establish thought leadership, etc. We could start a medium account and post there or we could just add a blog section to our website. How do people normally decide which method is best for them? I understand there is SEO advantages and wider distribution advantages but im looking for some more nuanced takes. Any thoughts?
