- rahkiin 3y agoWeb attestation would remove the need for captchas (reference to the web attestation threads)
- badRNG 3y agoThe sorts of people getting captchas are the sorts that would actively avoid "web attestation." It's more likely that they'd simply be prevented from using the site entirely.
- qup 3y agoWhat is it about a person that makes them the sort that would get a captcha? I get them, and I'd like to change my ways.
- kevincox 3y agoAre you sure it would? How hard would it be for spammers to buy a Windows machine and run Chrome?
- smusamashah 3y agoFor me the captcha was just a checkbox. I assumed that they do need it. There is lots of bot activity on https://ourworldoftext.com https://ourworldoftext.com
- samwillis 3y agoIf you don't like a post on HN, just don't upvote it. HN guidelines: https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html > Please don't complain about tangential annoyances—e.g. article or website formats, name collisions, or back-button breakage. They're too common to be interesting. The devs will certainly have a reason for having a captcha, I suspect it keeps the actual game fun rather than being overrun with bots.
- butz 3y agoProbably not the most optimal solution, but how about spinning up a small "demo" server without captcha, that is reset as often as possible?
- LapisHusky 3y agoPeople have ran clones of the site with no captcha and effectively no rate limit, they go pretty much how you'd expect: some people play normally, some people bot massively. Part of the reason this captcha exists on OWOP is because bots not only mess up art and other creations, but also lag the server with heavy usage.
