It's my first week actively using Hacker News. Trying to learn more about how it works. I think I noticed a point reduction - is this common? Why does it happen?

Just don't have conservative viewpoints and you'll be fine.

  I've found just the opposite to be true. I spent some time writing conservative comments, and some time writing liberal comments. My experience is that at least mildly conservative comments are far less likely to get down voted than liberal comments.
