I wouldn't trust the US public to plan a lunch outing, never mind NASA's budget. This is basically just a reflection of which blockbuster movies they watched in the late 1990's and early 2000's, not an informed opinion with knowledge of NEO surveillance and the challenges in diversion. I'd add that if you want NASA to prioritize something that extreme, you need to support a significant funding increase over many years.
