While I don't want a "WeChat of the western world"...
> Facebook parent Meta has spent years trying to make its flagship platform a destination for everything online
> Google, Snap, TikTok, Uber and others have also tried to jump on the super app bandwagon, expanding their offerings in an effort to become indispensable to people as they go about their day
Snap, TikTok, and Uber haven't. That's just a lie.
Google maybe? They haven't offered banking, they barely do social, and they haven't consolidated everything into a mega-app. A mega OS, maybe.
Facebook, perhaps the closest, but not really. The opposite: Facebook even separates its messaging out into their own apps. Creates many small apps rather than one mega app.
I would say nobody has tried it.
- senttoschool 3y agoYou forgot Square (Block) on that list as well for Jack Dorsey has always wanted Square to become a super app. It's not that no body has tried. Literally every western big tech company wanted to build a super app the equivalent of WeChat. For whatever reason, it just never worked. It remains to be seen if the economics and/or cultural differences in the West would allow for a super app.
- tianqi 3y agoSuch a super app controls and monitors people in a way that is intolerable or even unimaginable at all in the western world.
- WhereIsTheTruth 3y agoMany have tried in Europe/Japan and even in South Korea Viber, Line, KakaoTalk For some reasons the press doesn't want to mention them too much, I think they just want it to be 100% US made, I wonder why, specially when they mention "for the west", "for the world" :) https://streamable.com/m7c2hh https://streamable.com/m7c2hh
