Diversifying Society’s Leaders? Admission to Highly Selective Private Colleges
- Bostonian 3y agoI don't buy the argument that the Ivies need to be demographically representative of America so that America's leaders will be, because (1) leaders should not be drawn predominantly from a small group of schools (2) you do not need to be black/brown/white in order to represent well your black/brown/white constituents.
- Kaibeezy 3y agoI don’t think these “leaders” are being “drawn” in the sense of an expressly intentional selection, it’s just how things end up going. As an example, a few years back, a study showed that law school graduates from about the top 20 or 30 schools took effectively all the top clerkships and large firm jobs. Among the bottom half - half! - of law schools it was close to zero with a few exceptions. It turned out many low ranked schools gave a full ride to a handful of top applicants, valedictorian material, who could be the exception. The school could then legitimately claim they had placed “students” in these competitive jobs. The expose depressed law school admissions for a decade. There was a major article in the Atlantic, should be easy enough to track down.
