The training data comes from them simply paying poor people to have their eyeballs scanned, the project has been in the works for quite a while. HN isn't exactly their target demographic, you'd be surprised how many people are sadly ready to have their eyeballs scanned for a bit of cash (which they cleverly pay out in their own made-up token, so it doesn't actually cost them that much).
