Platform teams get stuff done
- politelemon 3y agoThis reads like the return of the 'ops' function from years ago, that DevOps/SRE was trying to get rid of. It would be good to know if anyone's companies have implemented some or all of these patterns. Reading through the examples gives me a sense of "corporate happy path divorced from reality" because I've never seen these work, despite sincere attempts to make it work by those involved... but that's my own observations, perhaps I'm an outlier? The platform team has no customer incentive and a different sense of urgency compared to the product team. Platform teams will always be understaffed and overworked, the company has no incentive to invest in them as long as stuff's kind-of working. So why would any sane product team want to accept an unsupported platform/integration into their codebase when they're then at the mercy of this team which is barely able to support the thing? Slapping fancy terms on these like "tour of duty" silly. It's a grand term for absolving responsibilities afterwards. "Trusted outsider" is sillier, in an organization you don't really get a choice to tell someone they're untrusted, it means you are forced to accept a code contribution from someone else who won't necessarily be keen on your practices.
