Ask HN: Meta launched Threads without a desktop client. Was it a fatal mistake?
- akerl_ 3y agoEh. I’m still shocked that Instagram has no native iPad client, but it’s still very popular.
- uberman 3y agoIs Threads tarketting an older generation who might prefer a desktop experience or is it targeting a younger generation who might not care about desktop?
- andrewstuart 3y agoI’m the older generation and I’m desktop mainly for Twitter. I signed up for Threads but I don’t use it.
- uberman 3y agoAs am I. My point is that we might not be the demographic that they are after. Perhaps they feel Facebook caters to us.
- gunapologist99 3y agoEven if true, they've dropped so precipitously that they clearly were ignoring some key demo.
- fullshark 3y agoYes I think they underestimated the level of interest and how many first impressions they were going to deliver. Regardless if they actually do generate a user base having meaningful conversations organic growth back to the launch numbers is very doable.

- andrewstuart 3y agoAll the desktop only users are going to be hard to bring back, if they wanted to try and bounced off the two obstacles of Meta not owning the domain, and then on the other domain having nothing to use.
- smoldesu 3y agoAll the desktop-only users probably relied on good clients that broke after the API changes. I don't think the majority of users ever cared.
- qat8 3y agoInstagram was mobile only for years and it launched back when smartphones were just beginning to be ubiquitous. I think threads will be just fine.
