Everyone keeps calling them offices, but I used to work in them and they felt a lot more like code factories to me. Good riddance.

- colechristensen 3y agoYeah, if I actually had an office I would probably be significantly more into the idea. Instead I was paid in the top whatever small percentile of workers and had, at best, a few feet in a couple of directions in a big open room where I spent a third of my life. Which is just... stupid capitalism. Degrading conditions until they are just above intolerable.
- spudlyo 3y agoWhen I started my career in the late 80s programmers had their own offices, which was great. Then in the 90s I largely worked in shared offices, which was still OK. By the late 90s everyone was working in cubicles, which was a step down, and I longed for the days of offices. Then, for me, in the teens it had seemed that everyone had converted to the open-plan hellscape we're all now familiar with, and I longed for the days of cubicles. Now since the pandemic, I work from my personal office at home, which is the absolute best, and I'm never going back.
