  Simply labeling it as a "panini press" is a step in the right direction; perhaps people mistake it for a George Foreman Grill! (The whole idea of the George Foreman Grill was that you smash something really fatty, and then the fats liquefy and drip out of the food and down the grill, and you don't eat them. Perhaps this was a holdover from the "fat is bad" days.)
