Melodramatic? More like realistic, as shown by history.
- pvaldes 3y agoThe problem is that this history shown here is too simplistic. After our "war against whales" that lasted more or less until 1960-70's, the removal of cetaceans created a "big hole" in the ecosystem . Krill was free to grow and its levels exploded exponentially. For a lot of time there was a lot of extra krill in the ocean waiting for a predator. And the predator came quickly to take advantage of the situation and fix it
- pvaldes 3y agoIt was neither a cetacean nor a primate. It was a big and very specialized member of the order Carnivora. The only known carnivora that is evolving to turn into a filterer. Currently is one of the most frequent wild carnivores in the planet. The crabeater seal, also known as krill-eater seal. We could be talking about between 7 and 75 millions of krill-eater seals in Antarctic coasts, each one around 200Kg weight, and weren't mentioned a single time in this article.
- pvaldes 3y agoCrabeaters are killed by leopard seals, so an explosion of crabeaters means and increase in leopard seals. And more leopard seals means much less penguins. We will need to remember this later, when the article claims that the poor penguins are vanishing by the greed of fishermen
- pvaldes 3y agoAnd then there is the climate crisis also, introducing further changes and threatening this animals. Because the ice sheet areas where krill like to meet and swarm are decreasing, as the article points
