Systemd by Example
- CameronNemo 3y agoThis is pretty neat. How do they create the playground systems on demand I wonder?
- bravetraveler 3y agoThe about page briefly mentions Podman containers
- smashed 3y agoVery neat indeed. It says on the about page that it starts a container on demand and gives you the output. You can see in the output that systemd detects it is running under podman. No idea what kind of container as a service they are using, and how they secure/lock it down. Systemd is a pretty powerful system, you can make it execute pretty much anything...
- yonatan8070 3y agoThe bit where you edit the unit files is essentially built-in RCE
- CameronNemo 3y agoPresumably there are limits in place via podman (cgroups)... I didn't test them but did feel the urge to do so. I also didn't test network access, which could cause arbitrary code execution.

- waynesonfire 3y agoThat this is needed validates my bias.
- ttymck 3y agoHow should any piece of software be taught if not by example?
- atoav 3y agoSounds like an admin friend of mine who shoots himself into the foot with his alternative init systems constantly and complains about systemd all the time — and if you ask him it becomes clear he never bothered to read up on how to use it properly. Meanwhile I have never had a single problem with it — including with complicated microservice structures, maybe because I started diving into Linux after systemd already was present everywhere? Edit: I want to add that I am aware of the unfortunate way in which systemd was introduced and I am not too symphatetic towards Lennart Poettering, but that doesn't change that I had no troubles with systemd. Pulseaudio on the other hand...
- mike_hock 3y agoI don't think it's needed. I learned how to use systemd just fine without it.
- Flimm 3y agoThis looks like a neat website! I'm glad to dive in. Can anyone recommend any other books or courses to learn systemd?
