I think scientists can be very helpful in this endeavour by suggesting things that interested amateurs can do. Of course, this doesn't mean they shouldn't do anything else! One example: As a hobby astronomer, i can help advance science by taking measurements. I've found information about this topic to be somewhat difficult to find. There is a telescope which makes it very easy (the Unistellar), but it appears overpriced to me (4500€ for a telescope with a small 114mm mirror!).
