How Many Square Miles of Solar Panels Would IT Take to Power the U.S.?
- m463 3y agoDon't know why we don't just do this. Use some financial instruments and fund solar panel factory factories, fund panel factories, and then the solar farms. Same for batteries. And technically, we don't need to make the 100 sq miles contiguous, and we could put the batteries anywhere, possibly some close to the panels, some closer to the customers. We might need to put them near established electricity corridors, or fund new corridors too. I don't know why they couldn't start making money immediately, even with wholesale power 2-4c / kwh.

- GauntletWizard 3y agoI'm impressed by the bad math on display here - 100 miles by 100 miles is 10,000 square miles, or about seven times the size of Rhode Island, not a tenth... Though it would still only be a tenth of Nevada, which is one of the prime states to cover, and there's already major solar installations.
- akomtu 3y agoIf the article was written by the latest version of chatgpt, then the math is fairly decent.
- mbfg 3y agoAnyone know how many square miles of solar panels are estimated to be installed in the US now?
