2023 Mid-Year Compensation Report
- AYBABTME 3y agoBlockchain at the bottom, AI at the top. Makes sense to me. Both have heavy hype cycles but AI is actually interesting and generally useful. Blockchain... arguably can be useful, but it's more of a stretch and it almost comes hand-in-hand with revolutionaries. Coupang being in the top for Senior Engineer is unexpected. Aren't they entirely in South Korea? Do they pay those salaries in Seoul? Seems way out of whack versus the market there. If they hire outside Korea, why? Aren't all their operations in Korea? Why do they need to hire outside talent?
- red-iron-pine 3y ago> arguably can be useful, but it's more of a stretch and it almost comes hand-in-hand with revolutionaries. i disagree with most of this sentence. i can't find any use case that isn't niche, or else backing currencies mostly used to buy drugs or evade Chinese anti-corruption laws. and "revolutionaries" is laughable -- they're mostly white collar bros who think they understand tech and economics but keep getting fleeced. AI has some scary implications, and we've been able to articulate what those are for a while now.
- AYBABTME 3y agoBy revolutionaries I mean that for blockchain to work, most real practical usages would involve throwing away the financial world and rebuilding it with blockchain, hoping in the meantime that we're not just building a worst second system. Which I think is not desirable at all. Basically, I think this aspect of Blockchain is completely out of whack. So what remains is niche usecases, which like you I think are mostly not useful. So basically I think blockchain is overall either undesirable, unpractical, or useless.
- gumby 3y ago"A blockchain" can be quite useful, "the blockchain" is nonsensical. So we sign all our sensor data and roll up every installation in a merkel tree (including timestamps from GPS). Our revenue comes from the integrity of those measurements. This is simply boring computer science and we avoid any mention of "blockchain" for the reasons of your comment. But technically it is a chain of blocks.
- AYBABTME 3y agoYeah the term as been usurped. Obviously there's usefulness to cryptographic data structures. But what casual bystanders hear when they hear "blockchain" is "redo the financial world!" and "throw away the Fed and banks!".
