Many many years ago my dad, with his fresh ChemE degree, was a junior engineer at a chemical plant near Houston. Probably the kind of role that would have been responsible for ensuring that things are working correctly and things like popcorn polymer (or the 1940s equivalent) weren't building up. He found the job so dull that he quit and left the field completely.
