Academia is rotten to the core. My wife is doing her PhD and the stories she tells me are absolutely scary. It's about how you can easily fake your entire research, manipulate the numbers and writing a borderline fictional thesis and still earn your PhD. And all that with no oversight, and in lots of cases, the little oversight there is turns the blind eye because the professors have a lot to gain from having their name mentioned in the papers.
