The quotes from the chair of the board and from the president himself in the second paragraph of the article are very important. Neither concedes that Tessier-Lavigne's conduct disqualifies him from his position as a preeminent researcher. (Indeed, he will retain his tenure as a professor.) It is the impact of the report and the discussions of the allegations which make his continued presidency untenable. Do you note the subtlety?
Secondly, I encourage every interested reader here to pull up the actual report and read it. (The report and other statements from the board can be found on the board's website [0].) In a large laboratory, both honest mistakes and intentional data manipulation will occur. They just will. There is no evidence to suggest Tessier-Lavigne participated knowingly in fraudulent activity. All the evidence points to the fact that he was made aware of the issues at some point or another, proceeded to take some corrective action, but did not ultimately do enough. Pass your judgments on his actions and inactions, by all means, but make sure you're passing judgment on what happened, not on the impression you get of what happened from reading news articles.
