It's not a good markup language, it really isn't. It's not good at semaphore either, or paving roads. I tried spackling a hole in my drywall with it, and it failed miserably. But when you want to write a document that is both human readable and machine interpretable, and you've only got 30 seconds to learn the syntax, nobody has ever been able to beat it. So I guess it depends on what you want.
