tl;dr an article from the Journal of Early American Life about the role of salt(y lakes and flats) in south western Native American, especially Pueblo, lives before and during the Spanish Empire. The Pueblos tried to use it within the replacement rate (for fear of exhaustion) and avoid disputes around it (by leaving weapons at home when gathering salt). The Spanish regime treated these areas as theirs to exploit and rigged 'agreements' to that effect for export throught their empire. However, the Americans of the area sometimes resisted this, ex the Apaches of the Salinas district raided export convoys until the Spanish were forced to abandon it for a time.
I suspect the person sharing this sees some parallels with the current political resistence over the sale of salt flat lands to lithium mining companies in Utah [0] and Chile [1].
