El Nino/La Nina refer to Pacific Ocean current patterns, and thus matter especially to people on the Pacific coasts. You hear about it because this includes people in California and Washington US states (among others), which are overrepresented on this board, as well as all of China, Japan, South East Asia etc. However, they can produce global effects, as the pacific ocean is really big. In the UK, you probably hear about the Gulf Stream a lot.
