This is a great article. IMO engineers and product managers building e-commerce and related systems should at the very least spend a few days at a physical store to observe and document how they work. A great number of engineers are asked to build software in domains for which they have very little idea. For example, Uber engineers would learn a great deal by spending a few days with a driver. They can then place their own system components in context and make sense of it all. Failing to learn domain knowledge has resulted in so many half ass wheels being reinvented.
