Bugzilla: Disable `media.av1.enabled` in Firefox for better battery life
- nateb2022 3y agoOne of the major complaints against Firefox on MacOS is that it consumes more battery. A major reason behind this is that Apple Silicon (and Intel processors <11th gen, AMD pre-RTX6000 series, and NVIDIA pre-3000 series) don't support hardware AV1 decoding, which is FF's default. Thus, playing AV1 videos results in high CPU load, which consequently drains the battery faster than Safari and Chrome which usually resort to hardware supported codecs. Disabling AV1 by default on unsupported hardware could very well improve the battery life for a lot of Firefox users on Mac, Windows and Linux.
