A very fundamental question in the AI/ML business is how we are going to avoid monopolies, as so much of the capital (and thus computing power) gets centralized to a few companies. The fact that so much of this work is built on open research makes it even more questionable. You can only get that far with theoretical research - when it comes down to it, money / funding is what actually realizes the product.
