I agree with this. One of my best friends is a huge anime fan. He's also caucasian-American. He finds a sense of wonder and exoticness traveling to Japan, and Asia in general. I'm Asian. While I enjoy traveling to Asia, I don't get the same sense of wonder and exoticness as I do traveling to...Europe. Which coincidentally, he does not.
