Déjà vu for me. This reminds of the early days of the web when I was trying to explain it to an elderly guy — a retired math teacher no less — who thought it couldn't possibly succeed: Who's going to pay for all this? Why would anyone make information available to the whole world for free? What if anyone anywhere put up something that was illegal, a copyright/trademark/patent violation, or a libelous remark, then the whole thing would get shut down. Since anyone could write anything without review, everything would be spiral down to lies and garbage and no one could trust anything. Therefore no one would use it. And therefore no one would contribute any further to the web.
Laugh if you will, but it was very difficult to come up with counter-arguments to overcome these objections in those early days.
- cubefox 3y agoSounds exactly what I thought when I first heard of Wikipedia. What, anyone can edit? Pure anarchy! Surely it would get taken over by trolls immediately!
