I live in Canada and certainly in Toronto that is my way of getting taxis. If you're anywhere downtown they are cruising around and you just have to wave. And hotels and transport hubs have them waiting.
When uber and Lyft came out, I suspect taxi business went way down both because of lower prices and better service - taxis really sucked for lots of reasons. But now there is no price difference and taxis have approved while "ride sharing" has gotten worse. In most cases now I only take taxis because I can get one quicker and because I don't have to deal with uber's abhorrent customer service in the event of a problem.
