America fell out of love with ice cream
- hdlothia 3y agoI think fell out of love is a bad way to phrase it tbh I think most Americans still feel the same way, but have been compelled to stop because of health reasons. This is mostly nitpicky on my part though and it's still a good article. I wish I could eat more ice cream and not gain weight/ increase my risk of diabetes.
- Grazester 3y agoYep. It's just too much sugar and as the country increasingly becomes older that becomes a health issue.
- yuppie_scum 3y agoWell good, more for me
- h2odragon 3y agoIce cream became artificial or expensive; and then got flooded with silly stunts like "little debbie" flavors. Few today have made (or had others make) real ice cream to have a standard to compare against. I expect a new revival of home made ice cream soon. Its a good route to selling a bunch of hardware. Make a bunch of mini refrigeration units wrapped around the usual agitator motor: "salt free" ice cream maker. Do a few infomercials and it could be the next Juicero.
- ksaj 3y agoYes, ice cream that melts into what resembles a soapy sponge, and takes weeks to finally disappear from the sidewalk is scary. Thankfully there still are ice cream makers that use actual cream, and not whatever this modern concoction is. Someone will come up with an Instant Pot convenience level ice cream maker, and then it'll be worth eating again.
- ksaj 3y agoThe Peanut Butter Parfait from the ice cream truck in our neighbourhood is $8. I think that has a lot more to do with why people aren't buying as much as they used to.
- Flatcircle 3y agoNot me
- lusus_naturae 3y agoThe portion sizes in America are astronomical for everything, including for dessert items that can be served in smaller sizes. I order the "kid" size ice cream everywhere I go and tell them to cut it in half because even the kid size is ridiculously more than it needs to be. Besides the portion sizes, every ice cream shop has the same trite flavors that are mass recycled on a seasonal basis, and very few places try to make anything in store or try different flavors. I still enjoy icream cream though, now and again, I just wish it would become more of an experience again as opposed to something to do if nothing better is on the calendar.
- NoZebra120vClip 3y agoWell, there's less ice cream on the market accessible to consumers. Look closely at those tubs in the freezer at the grocery store, and you'll see that many of them are "Frozen Dairy Dessert", because they don't measure up to the standards to be properly labeled as "Ice Cream". Not knowing this subtle distinction, we purchase something like ice cream, but it's worse, we have a bad experience with it, and we're less likely to buy anything like it at all. Sometimes I purchase ice cream from a specialty restaurant, and their gimmick is that they carry three dozen "mix-in" ingredients that you can have added to the base ice cream before it's scooped into your cone. But, I'm obese; I need to go easy on those empty calories, but it was good at a baseball game.
