One of my most vivid recollections of quality-assurance lab work at a chemical production plant was the weekly cleaning of the QC stills. Cool tap water ran 24x7 through glass vessels surrounding small distillation towers. Over time, alkaline deposits from the tap water would adhere to the glass and reduce the cooling efficiency. We cleaned the vessels by injecting HCL into the tap water once a week. As the acid solution passed through the stills' cooling tubes (about 10' x 12' glassware) the occluded glass became pristine in less than a minute - a very striking display of acid effects in solution upon alkaline deposits.
