Nothing in My Way Except Myself
- turtleyacht 3y agoIn the context of writing a programming language, where not so much functionality need be brought in by third-party dependencies, as much of the meat of things is the syntax (semantics) itself: parsing, interpreting, and associated debugging. As privileged to be observing some of a programming language author's internal thoughts, it's wonderful to see more brainstorm-like journaling interspersed with snippets of this ur-lang, without a single `import`, `#include <`, or package.json in sight (yet). Some of the rare instances of writing a "language" has been parsing Gherkin, or code to "emit" code. It's pure programming; the constructs approach state machines, built strings, and little else. It is joy, in the midst of the mundane glue.
