It probably differs much per country and individual, but in my experience (Western Europe) it's the other way around. My parents generation grew up with 5 children at home, there wasn't much wealth to distribute downwards and anything that did had to be divided by 5. Now it's usually two children and there's quite a bit more wealth, most people I know that buy a house do get financial help from their parents.
