Even with my red diaper marxist upbringing, I have to say, it was a lot easier in 1991 to give Conservatives the benefit of the doubt when they claimed to be the grownups in the room. With my sainted grandmother's precious Soviet empire in flames, the idea that Capitalism might not just be a good thing, as Marx said, but in fact, the only possible thing. But no, it's pretty much played out exactly like my most cynical 1991 take, and Lord Animalsmell is the poster boy for the fact that no, while there might have been a grownup or two in the room at some point, they have long since vacated and their degenerate children have taken over.
