My father never built a Geiger counter, but he definitely brought them home from work once in a while.
My childhood friend had a basement full of pinball machines, which are notorious for complex electromechanical design and repair, whether you built your own or not!
Is it me, or did the PC market lack a "construction kit" sector for a long time? By the time that the Intel processor with ISA bus was commoditized, there should have been a demand for a company to gather all necessary parts to build a computer: case, motherboard, processor, DRAM, floppy, HDD, cables, keyboard, mouse, monitor, certify they all work together, and then sell it for the DIY guy to assemble like LEGO. But it was an intensely manual process for us instead. I picked up a "barebones" 386 chassis and motherboard, then selected parts out of the catalog that should be compatible. And the complexity increased. Now, we have PCPartPicker that will theoretically let you build a PC with compatibility checks in place.
