(Hackaday) learn assembly first, last or never
- simonblack 3y agoif you are over 40, you might have learned BASIC first. And yes, I did. BUT ... my first computer had but a mere 16K of RAM in the beginning, and extra RAM cost $25 for each kilobyte. On top of that, my DOS plus the BASIC interpreter took up 15K of that 16K, leaving a mere 1K for me to write any BASIC program in. And a 1K BASIC program has not very many lines at all. So, I was forced to learn Z80 assembly programming. I was also forced to do that assembly programming by hand, on large sheets of teleprinter paper, because I couldn't afford to import an assembler for my system. (Not for a couple of years or so.) Even today, I do a little Z80/8080 programming under CP/M. I can 'read' many of the opcodes directly from the hex dump, enough to get a hazy sketch of what's happening anyway. (in 8080/Z80 machine code, 'C3' = 'jump', 'CD' = 'call', 'C9' = 'return from subroutine', 'DB' = 'input from data port', 'D3' = 'output to data port', '21' = 'load the main pointer register', etc, etc)
